As
described by the winning team, "In Touch with Eternity" is
a symbol of the contact which arises when human perseverance
results in divine generosity; when mankind
toils and struggles arduously for perfection and
the Gods grant all that is conceivably possible.
Also
evaluated were revised design proposals from Jacques
Cadilhac and Astrid Tuschen of Barcelona, Spain and
Shoei Yoh of Fujisawa, Japan. The five finalists
were selected in the preliminary round of the competition
in January.
The
selection committee, an internationally renowned
group of architects, artists, and sculptors included
David Crespo from Bolivia, Eleni Nicodemu from
Cyprus, David Yanay from Israel, Nikos Alexandropoulos
from Greece and the Karl Geckler and Tassos Papadopoulos
from the USA.
The
Monument of the Immortals launched a
search for a design for a monument that would
serve as the bridge between the history of the
ancient and modern Games by listing the names
of all victors from the start of the games in
776 BC through the modern resurrection in 1896
and for the next 1,000 years. The names will
be listed in the native tongue of the victor,
introducing a global element to the project.
The Monument of the Immortals is expected to
have a significant impact on the local economy
and regional tourism.
Competitors
from 48 countries and 30 US states registered and
submitted designs for consideration. The selected
finalists from the first phase of the competition
received a cash prize of $5,000 (USD). The winner
will direct the creative efforts in erecting the
newest addition to a proud tradition in Greece.
